Gifted Students
two shocking news about 2 gifted students I have received : Trịnh Đăng ( High School For The Gifted, HCMC ) are waitlisted though he has an excellent academic performance . Also, Hoàng Nguyễn ( LHP High School For The Gifted, HCMC ) get accepted by Harvard College though he's only 16 ( he's a 10 grader ). 2 gifted people with 2 different stories raise few thoughts on me.
First of all, I have to admit that my laziness prevents me from being a good students. Though I'm motivated, I do suprisingly laid-back and fun-loving at the same time. I often make excuses about many low scores I have received. I also cheat and play tricks in order to get high scores. I have a bit of intelligence, which may be the most important factors that keeps me survive in those years. . US is my dream and Swarthmore College is a the biggest part of my heart. I'm trying to get high scores in school, as well as taking part in activites ( Write Smart Club is my baby ) and learning English seriously in order to celebrate my 18th birthday in Pennsylvania. I have two personalities : nice and very helpful, one minute later, vicious, selfish and blunt.
Đăng Trịnh is one of the most excellent students I have known. He earn 116 in TOEFL, a second prize in the annual national examination. He was also a Singaporean Math Olympic gold medalist. Most unbelievable part : his GPA in 3 years is 9.5/10 ( remember, he's studying in one of the most prestigious high school in HCM, a real competitive environment). Once I was in the same class with two girls came from his class, they said that Đăng studied so crazily that they felt like he spent only 4 hours a day to sleep. Anywhere could be his work place, anytime could be his working hours and any text written in English could be his learning materials. So, why he was waitlisted ? The lack in personalities, over-confidence or perfectionism ? His story both scares and encourages me in different ways.
Scare : Although he's such a brilliant one, he was waitlisted. So how can a typical girl who doesn't get high scores in school be accepted by Swarthmore, the third best colleges in US ( ranked by US News )
Encourage : Okay, so score is not the important factor. Though you have you work hard for it, don't put too much pressure on your wick shoulder about it. Yeah, it does encourage me much since I has been despair over my poor performances on Math, Physics and Chemistry ( It doesn't sound like I am a student in science class, does it ? Yeah, I'm sorry to say that I make a terrible mistake choosing class in 10th grade ). Go on, I have to show them that I have potentials to grow up.
Secondly, Hoàng Nguyễn is one of the most well-known teenagers thanks to his excellent performance in computer science. Piano lessons, schooling, English, software-programming, he had to be used to those stuffs since he was a little kid. Yeah, his story also reminded me about an old friend of mine : Nam Phương, who wasn't allowed to hang out with her classmates in 8th grade because his father wanted her to stay at home and study. At that time, I was really angry and disappointed with Phương's father. She was a new girl in class then, why didn't he give her a chance to take a short breath ? Now that I have grown up, I change my mind. No pain no gain. People are in charge of their decision. No childhood yes bright future. Haha I still remember how envious I was when I heard Thảo took example of early-educated-brilliant-students :
Me :I'll home educate my child few years early before official school time.
Thảo : Dont you think your child will loose their childhood ?
Me : Whatever, he needs to be a brilliant one.
Thảo : Usually, what parents ask their child to do are what they couldnt do
Wow, I may ask my children to speak fluently 5 languages, play piano, do akido, be beautiful and be HARD-WORKING =)) 'cause that's what I lack of =)) [ I dont ask her to be rich because I'm gonna to be rich ]
Okay, stop here, Chemistry test 2morrow. I hope that I won't have another wicked performance. God bless me !

Re: Gifted Students
Nice story , friend.
It also make me scared, just a little bit . :drunken: .
Free your mind, friend , think about your 18th birthday .
Failing in doing something, it will be less regretful than not trying doing it. I always believe that. I also have dreams, I've already found the road to them and being on it. Everyday I think much about bright future and do not worry much about how unsuccessful I'm going to be. So, no regret. I know that there're many people who are better than me, still are unsuccessful, but I believe that I have a chance, and what I have to do is getting ready to catch it.
Someday, I can say that, someday ...
Hope to hear good news from your test-taking.

Re: Gifted Students
Well, such a nice story! I think the most important factor that every uni is looking for is how this student would contribute to the school environment. Impressive score, diverse aspects of extracurricular activities or perfect GPA ,of course are neccessary, but personality or characteristic, in my opinion, is the more important factor to answer the question above. But interesting characteristic is uncomparable, and that's why we can't understand what's our chance
Swathmore is a very competitive uni . Good luck, Lan!

Nicolette's comment Just for ya know
Right now, which schools, it doesn't matter anymore. I swear if there is any school located in dessert or ice land giving me big budget of FA, I go for it
Finally, anh Đăng goes to Amherst. Give him a clap everyone. He survived through the crisis. And he's really helpful, anyone interested in Amherst can send questions to him. In fact, he's kind of begging people to send questions, lol, I'm just kidding
I agree that it's impossible to do well in all subjects, and that I don't feel as badly when one cheats on a secondary subject. High school is you last chance to find what you are ment to do before moving on to college where you will study the subject you wish to make a career out of. It's RIDICULOUS how colleges are only accepting children who do well in everything. Nine times out of Ten times, the ones who get perfect marks on everything cheated. If I were head of a college, I would accept kids who excel in one subject, as that shows that child has a passion for something and works hard towards it. I would not choose the person who excels and getts high marks in every subject becuase that means they are just doing well to get into a college and does not have a passion for one subject.
Colleges are becoming ridiculous, and if you ever heard of CollegeBoard.com... they are the most evil people on earth. I could rant about this topic for ages, but I have some biology homework to do :D
